A Good Day to Dracu-Riot (Status Update 5)

As some of you may have already seen, Sekai Project just announced at Anime Expo today that they’ve licensed and will release Dracu-Riot (as well as Senren Banka!). So here’s the low-down: they have been in contact with us recently, and have expressed interest in using our work. We haven’t actually signed a deal yet, but we have no reason to refuse if they’re asking for our help.

So yep, we’re going official. What does that mean?

  • No more patch releases, of course.
  • As with most fan translations gone official, this means that it will probably take a little longer to release, but hopefully not too much longer.
  • It will be of a higher level of quality than if it was to remain a fan translation.
  • You will still get your porn; they announced an 18+ version as well. I haven’t spent all that time recently transcribing moans and sound effects for nothing!

I understand many of you will feel jilted, and I understand that. However, for us, we are immensely proud of the work we’ve been putting into this project. What started as an ill-conceived attempt to hurriedly poop out a complete DR patch based on Insem’s earlier work has turned into a far more serious project. We have been completely overhauling the translation in order to make it something befitting of this hilarious and amazing moege. To me, it’s only fitting that we now take this project to the next level, to the stage it belongs on.

I imagine most status updates will now come from Sekai Project, so we won’t use this blog for Dracu-Riot much anymore. Thank you to all who have shown their support thus far.

People like Kurt are the cockroaches of the internet. They have no life so they take out their strife on other people. It’s best to just ignore them because if you do, they will just give up and go away. There are tons of people like Kurt on the internet but honestly, they don’t even deserve to be replied to. I just wanted to say congrats on getting your worked used and don’t listen to that kid, if he wants to play it so badly he can go learn Japanese or ask his mom to put him in Japanese classes or something. If only people like him used 5% of their time on learning Japanese instead of playing with themselves in their moms basement 24/7, things would be a whole lot more pleasant for everyone. Anyway, good luck on the translation with Sekai Project.

Thanks Decay and everyone else in theoxfordcommaissuperiorsubs For all the hard work you put in to make this happen. You definitely earned this and I look forward to reading the finished product.;)

Yeah its a great thing they’ve been lying this whole time while in negotiation with Sekai so we can pay for a VN that’s already been translated and get to wait another 6-12 months for the +18 release for no good reason. At least one of the team members had enough foresight to “leak” it.

      • VirginSmasher says:

It’s honestly funny that you people don’t understand that people have to keep quiet while in negotiations. For one, it’d ruin the whole announcement and 2, they will have to keep silent in terms of the contract. I’m done with even arguing with people like you. You have no sense of business and you don’t care for the translation team. You just want them to release it to you plebs without having to pay for it instead of getting the translators paid.

      • Brian says:

I see /vg/ obviously stands for virgin. If you were in the same position, you would do the exact same thing. People need to be paid for work. If you used just a fraction of the time you spend trolling on learning Japanese instead, you would be able to read any visual novel you want but instead you would prefer to go call people down because they prefer to be paid for their work and want to be part of an official release, anyone would take that offer and they probably were under some sort of non-disclosure agreement until all of the negotiations were complete. Grow up kids, these people are spending hundreds of hours translating these things for free so you have absolutely no right to complain unless you go and translate it yourself. It’s just pathetic that you people automatically expect to get everything for free and if it takes longer, you think you have a right to complain. You should be thankful that there are people out there who translate visual novels for free, otherwise you wouldn’t have any material to play with yourself in your moms basement with. These guys also did Noble Works, which I myself have read and have thanked them for their time and effort. Grow up people and stop taking temper tantrums when things don’t go your way, especially when you’re not paying for them.

First off I wanted to congratulate on getting your work recognized and going official, in a not so important note I wanted to tell or rather ask those people who can’t see past what THEY want to think that even if they delayed it while talking to SP (which would make sense because otherwise it would’ve ruined the announcement) this talented team who thus far have been working for free finishing the work of someone else so that people can play and enjoy this visual novel deserve to be recognized and get paid for their hard work, they didn’t sell out, instead they’re getting what they deserve for the time and effort they’ve been putting into the project. And for all of you to say otherwise simply because you dislike the hand you’ve been dealt or because you feel betrayed somehow (which makes no sense at all in my honest opinion) it’s only rude and immature towards the team.

Once again, my sincerest congratulations to the team and a big thank you for your hard work so far.

    • Decay says:

I really cannot tell you anything more specific about the release date, I’m sorry. The “leak” does have everything translated, but huge chunks of the VN were completely unedited, and to be honest, I was really unsatisfied with the editing that is in that patch and I have since went back and improved everything pretty dramatically. That’s the actual reason this has taken so long to begin with. 🙂

This is a good month for visual novels anyway. We just had D.S. Dal Segno released, which isn’t a bad read. Also, Wagamama High Spec will be released on the 25th and Princess Evangile W Happiness will be released on the 28th. I myself have been waiting several years for Princess Evangile W Happiness. It was first announced in 2015 so it’s been about two full years I have been waiting.

So you really think Oxford team is the one that should get ALL the money from their agreement with SP? How about the actual translator? Since he already retired from the translation scene, they can use his translation and sell it however they want? BTW if you are going to reply to me again please give me a proper reply, if not don’t waste my time with your nonsense.

This is a valid concern to have, but it’s completely untrue here. I can’t really speak much for Staircase Subs since we aren’t directly related to them, but they ARE involved in this process, and ultimately, this arrangement doesn’t look like it will end up any different from any other fan TL that gets picked up (as in, everyone’s getting treated fairly).

I have mixed feelings about this.
I’m very happy about the team going official. I really am. I realy respect all translators, who work for simple thanks, so anonimous like me can read novels. So if they have money out of this – that’s a good thing. Right?
But I’m very annoyed about this tendency to feed those, who wait for translations for so long, with lies about progress. I understand that you had little choice (when you agreed to do official translation that is), but still that doesn’t make it easy for me. I’ve seen this so many times already.
It was obvious this will happen sooner or later. All this “we can’t tell you anything concrete right now, but we will translate it eventualy, just wait a bit” was real giveaway, since that was not the first project showing this signs. And that leak… Also making fun of fan translation is common is such cases too (which is a bad tendency, if you ask me).
Ah, and there’s this matter with you selling translation based on someone else’s work… No mater how much you’ll edit it, the base will still be there.
Well anyway, I wish translators the best, but, sadly, I can’t bring muself to support you with my money (and please, don’t bother writing “good riddance”. I’d like to at least save some respect for you). As they say: fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. And you’ve already made a fool of me. Good thing one can’t erase anything completely from intennet and I was able to get my hands on that leaked patch. I hoped I would not need it (I really wanted to trust in you, guys), and decided to wait untill there would be final release (I wanted to respect your wish). But looks like in the end I’ll be using it.
    And man I hate Sekai.
It’s tendency to pick projects, that are close to the finish… They stall the progress of VN’s translation in general (since most projects, they plan to release, would have been released without their help). Technicaly speaking they are just parasites, that feed on other’s work. I have a feeling they are using fan translations as a means to force novel creators to make an official one (what would you pick, if you were in creators shoes: let some fan TL to exist and have almost no money from that? or colaborate for official TL and make a profit from that?). And that thought makes me sick.

Man, I’m drained. Another long awaited project is dead (for me at least). I was waiting from the moment it was announced by Staircase. And after this much time another dissapointment. I would be ok with it if this project were commercial from the start, but when it happens so abruptly I just can’t accept it. Just ugh.

Still, thanks for noble works. From the bottom of my heart. Hope this letdown (for me and some of the users) will be worth it in the end.

P.s. And I hope I won’t see the day when Sekai will kill fan TL completely with their style of work.

You’re entitled to your opinions and I’m not about to combat you on them, but I do want to point out a couple things:

    >But I’m very annoyed about this tendency to feed those, who wait for translations for so long, with lies about progress.

I have not once lied about any of the progress we’ve made. We are still months away from completing our work. I spent several hours on the project yesterday and will do so again today. This project has been a lot of work, and it is taking a long time to get it to the level of quality we want it to be at and I’m sorry about that, but it is still the honest truth.

    >Ah, and there’s this matter with you selling translation based on someone else’s work… No mater how much you’ll edit it, the base will still be there.

As I pointed out in another comment recently, the original translator is involved too. Technically speaking, we’re not selling the translation, we’re “selling” the specific roles we’ve played in it. We’re not going to get more than what we’re due for the roles we’ve played (editing, TLC, finishing Miu route translation, primarily).

I know this experience has left a poor taste in your mouth and I’m sorry. I wish I could have found a better way to handle this, but I get the feeling people would have still gotten upset even if we had performed complete radio silence from the moment SP contacted us. I only ask that you try to see things from our perspective a little. We’ve been working really hard on this project and want as many people to appreciate it as possible. 🙂

Haha, ok, I see this debate about how “moral” it is to have this translation go commercial and to that I have only one thing to say: please, stop 😀 I see comments here complaining about the translation not being free anymore, but what I get from these comments is complaints about the whole GAME not being “free” anymore. Cause let’s face it, news about a localization done well should always be a good thing. Why?

First of all, even if the patch was released as a FREE fan translation, you would still have to BUY the original game. You choose to pirate that game, that is your choice and please own it. Also own that it doesn’t make it legal or right. Just take responsibility for the fact that this is your choice and no one can stop you, but at the same time, you are NOT entitled to a free game. You have to pay. You can choose not to, but don’t act like you are entitled to get it for free. The only thing you are getting for free is the service of translation, and for that reason you are also pretty shitty if you post things that show a sense of an entitlement of getting the translation. You are owed nothing. You did not pay for this service of translation.

Let’s continue that train of thought. The translation is free, you should morally speaking buy the game. That means importing the game from Japan and depending of where you live, also pay a shitload of taxes. In that context, learning about a localized version should leave you weeping tears of joy, cause not only you get directly translated text, no reason to fiddle with applying patches, but you most likely also get the game much CHEAPER than if you were to get it directly from Japan.

You don’t like Sekai’s policy regarding translations? Fair enough, that might be a reason to get upset, but the only thing I heard so far is that Sekai has a track record of approaching nearly completed fan-translations and making them commercial. Excuse me, but how the flying fudge is that a bad thing? You get your game cheaper and the people who worked really hard for that translation are getting recognized for their effort.

So honestly, unless you are aware of Sekai doing some reallu shady stuff, which does not include paying people for their work, the only reason as to why you would be upset at this news is if you weren’t planning on buying the original game in the first place 😀 Your choice, but in this case, no one owes you anything
